What is a sand filter?
A sand filter is a pool filtration system that pumps water through layers of sand to trap debris and particles, then reverses water flow during backwashing to clean the sand and drain waste.
Sand filters work by forcing pool water down through a tank filled with multiple layers of sand media. As water passes through the sand bed, debris, algae, dirt, and other contaminants get trapped in the spaces between sand grains, while clean water exits through lateral pipes at the bottom and returns to the pool.
The sand media itself is the filter's working component. Over time, as it collects trapped debris, the sand becomes denser and water flow slows.
